Ms Wong Yin-ling, Principal of Hotung Secondary School (2007-2013)

I feel truly blessed, and incredibly lucky, as my career
as well as the 60th Anniversary Celebration programme of
the school which I served for six years both came to a
perfect close by the end of the 2012/2013 school year.

Thanks to the enthusiasm and tireless effort of various
parties, from teachers and alumnae to current students
and their parents, together with a huge amount of good
luck, our year-long festivities went from strength to
strength and created countless joyous memories for
Hotung girls of all generations.  Finally, on the evening of
5 July, the celebration programme came to a jubilant end
when a Gala Night was held to showcase the artistic
talents and achievements of many members of our close-
  knit community.

I was particularly delighted when the absolute majority of my teaching staff responded eagerly to my appeal to
engage the teenage students in their charge on a human level, and in a non-traditional way, by dazzling them with their
enthralling (yet often hidden) talents, superb performance skills or charismatic stage persona, with the ultimate goal of
winning them over from those self-aggrandizing 'tutorial kings' or flashy pop stars.  At the Gala Night, ten of us,
including me, staged a hilarious mini Cantonese drama entitled Birthday Gifts from the Eight Immortals.  I was thrilled
to have the privilege of playing the title role of the Empress of Heaven, and I went all out to make my character look
radiant and majestic on the stage.  Our show was also bolstered by the original script penned by our literary-gifted Mr
Ng Kam-wing and the sumptuous costumes made by our iconic Mrs Ada Wong.

What immediately followed was a singing performance by a choir made up of most of our teachers, including, of
course, the cast of the mini drama.  To give a public display of our love for this wonderful school of ours, we sang the
age-old, heart-warming Happy Birthday song three times, each in a different language (from English to Cantonese and
then to Putonghua).  All of us could barely contain our joy and excitement when both our performances were greeted
with thunderous applause and rapturous cheers from the audience.

And with the close of the school's year-long 60th Anniversary
events, I found myself staring at the imminent approach of my official
retirement.  In the last six years, not a single day went by without me
feeling truly thankful for enjoying the prestige of being at the helm of
this remarkable institution, which boasts such a large community of
students, teachers, alumnae and parents sharing a really strong bond of
friendship, support and mutual affection.  Evidently, with such robust,
durable ties, made ever stronger by all the stakeholders' eagerness to
make whatever contribution they can, I have no doubt that the sky is
truly the limit for our school in the years to come.

My sweetest reward came at the Year-End Assembly,
held on the morning of 10 July, when student representatives
from the Prefects corp and the Student Union went up to the
stage to talk about what teachings of mine have impressed
and inspired them the most.  In unison, they made emphatic
reference to my appeal to them and their fellow schoolmates
to do their best to turn themselves into "4G Hotung girls", by
first setting worthwhile Goals, then immediately Getting
started and striving to Grow, and finally bringing Glory to
themselves, their family and the school.

Next, they recited my teaching regarding the importance
of having good manners and being genuinely earnest, which
is encapsulated in this short verse :

  點頭微笑揮揮手,基本禮貌我要有;
  唔該多謝不離口,做人真誠要講究。

After that, they thanked me for introducing them to the
SMART criteria, which offer a clear, concrete guide to the
setting of objectives, namely that they should be Specific,
Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time-bound.  And
when they assured me, before leaving the stage, that they
would take all these words of advice to heart in the years to
come, I just could not help grinning from ear to ear.  To an
educator like me, such remarks from students are far better
and more satisfying than any retirement gifts that they can
  buy and shower on me.

I was deeply touched, and hugely amused, when three
teacher representatives went up to the stage to sing my
praises and, next, to offer me advice on how to make the
best of my retirement years.  First, they called on me to try
my best to be a "4G Hotung retiree", by Getting a life,
embarking on Globetrotting, busying myself with Games or
Gadgets, and, finally, maintaining my image of Glamour
and Glitter.  Next, they urged me to practise a healthy
lifestyle of quality sleep, nutritious meals and regular
  exercise :

  晨運遠足養番狗,充足睡眠您要有;
  甜品doughnut要忍口,健康飲食須講究。

Lastly, they reminded me of the importance of staying
SMART in my retirement years.  According to them, I need
to be Serene & Satisfied, be Mentally alert, be Active
physically, be Remarkably Regal (to suit my image as the
Empress of Heaven) and, most important of all, be
  Terrifically HAPPY !

Never in my life was I so happy to have the table turned on me!  And with such sweet, heartwarming memories, I
stepped out of the school gate with a wide, beaming smile on my face.
